ok, here are some excercises i have been doin that have really improved my playing

this first one is just a c major scale, but it has some good stretches and stuff for your fingers
make sure you use alternate picking for these first 2 excercises
e----------------------------------------------------15-17-19-20--
b--------------------------------------------15-17-19-------------
g--------------------------------12-14-16-17----------------------
d--------------------10-12-14-15----------------------------------
a---------8-10-12-14----------------------------------------------
e-8-10-12---------------------------------------------------------

e-19-17-15--------------------------------------------------------
b----------19-17-15-----------------------------------------------
g-------------------17-16-14-12-----------------------------------
d-------------------------------15-14-12-10-----------------------
a-------------------------------------------14-12-10-8------------
e-------------------------------------------------------12-10-8---
remember to start of slowly and build up your speed.

this second one is good for practicing getting all your fingers going fast
e-----------------------8-9-10-11-12-11-10-9-
b------------9-10-11-12------------------------
g-9-10-11-12-----------------------------------
d-------------------------------------------------
a-------------------------------------------------
e-------------------------------------------- ----

--------------------------------------------------------------
13-12-11-10----------------------------------------------------
-----------13-12-11-10----------------------------------------
-------------------------14-13-12-11---------------------------
-------------------------------------15-14-13-12---------------
-------------------------------------------------16-15-14-13-12~

ok, this last one is tapping,
when tapping, you hit the note with the "t" above it, with one of your right hand fingers ( u can also use the side of your pick for a more aggressive sound, though u often hit other strings!) any way, ive only shown the top e string here cos thats all ya need except on the fourth one.

p= pull off
t
e-19-15p12- x4

t
e-17-14p10- x4

t
e-15-12p8- x4

t
e-------------
b-19-15p12- x4

i hope these excercises help with your playing, and email me at thomas_brooke91@hotmail.com with any questions, advice or correcrtions

cheers, thomas brooke
p.s can someone please do another subject on tapping, cos i would really like to learn more.

Hi thomas,

how about taking a classical Tapping shape but hammering onto other strings?

------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------
-9-4------10-5-------12-7-------10-5--------
------5------- ---7-------- --9------- ---7------
---------7----- ----9----- -----10----------9----
---------------------------- ---------------------

The first note on the g string is tapped.
At the beginning try just one shape. As soon as you have that down, just move it diatonically. Smile
Bye

Stephan

How about the good old Nuno Bettencourt tapping?

----------------------------17p10h14h17p14p10-----------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------19p11h14---------------------------14h19p14p11----
-19p12h14-------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I didn't add any 't's but you always tap the highest note on each string.
Have fun !!!

PS: That's the major shape. If you want minor, just lower the 11th fret on the g-string to 10 fret.

good idea is to write your own licks and try and make them non scalar to give your fingers a work out

edit-dead links taken away:)

Great playing JJW!

I like the way you are developing your own ideas.
Refreshing to hear.

thanks Chris Very Happy I used to write down loads of licks and lines during and after i attended the guitar Institute in London. They have all been lost and forgotten many years ago but i wish i kept it going for longer than i did.
I know other musicians regulary write new ideas every day and have a huge reference tool to look back on and use.

And of course now i have songs to learn with my band so the lead aspect will not be so bold.My main goal now when noodling is to make sure new stuff i learn is stored in long term memory,as my short term memory is piss poor..lol
