Hotep Captain,

Thanks for the welcome!

Interesting reply .... Hhhmmmmm

Regarding the Jimi lineage thing, as a student of Performing Arts H.S. NYC, in the late '60's, I was in the official Hendrix fan club for Warner/Reprise. The vice Pres. of the club was in my music classes. We definitely had the most comprehensive "Hendrix watch" ever. We probably knew his almost every move more than the intelligence agencies who were watching him. Jimi took his fan club seriously & sometimes a small group of us were around him, especially at the Record Plant & Ladyland studios, that is until his protogee' Velvert Turner would show up & kick us out. Many a time, during his 'downtime' at a session or jam, he would sit with us talking about music &/or ask us to play, commenting on what he heard...... In any case, the vice Pres. of the club & I were responsible for getting Jimi (as well as a few famous Jazz musicians) to speak in an assembly at Performing Arts H.S..... I also tried to get him to come to gigs I was doing, but he always said he didn't want to see me do HIS show, he wanted to see me do MY original show. A year before he died, Jimi was taking a mail correspondence course at Berklee College of Music in Boston, thanks to his friend Quincy Jones. Jimi inspired me & 2 others from the club to actually attend that college. I am not claiming the ONLY personal lineage with Jimi, just one of the teens back then who he tried to make sure would stay focused on the "music as a spirituality" vibe!... It never dawned on me & some others in that club how important he was as a human being until years after he died. In fact, during that time I was hanging around Jimi, I envied my cousin, who got me into guitar & hung around Led Zepplin when they came to NYC. Back then I actually thought that was more kooler than the few times I hung around Jimi!

Regarding the "women/showbiz gimmick" comment.... I'm not sure where that is coming from??!! My post directed folks to the Hendrix show portion of my site, not my original projects.

Regarding the "Egyptian stuff"... I prefer to keep my spirituality 'in the closet' on non religious/spiritual boards which is why it wasn't mentioned in my post!

All in all, I'm not a star or a legend as of yet, just someone tryin' to get his shine on like every other performer out there!

Actually i am listening Stockholm 1/9/70 Great show (dedicated to Eva Sundquist).

It was obvious Jimi was going into serious music at the time they murdered him, thanks for letting us know .

Jimi took correspondence courses at Berklee College of Music in Boston?

I have never heard that before? Do you know what he was taking or who it was with?

<< Can you tell us how Jimi connected with Quincy ??? >>

I'm not sure how the connection was made. It is mentioned somewhat in Henderson's book & I have heard Quincy speak VERY fondly of the relationship. Some other close connections with Jimi I find quite fascinating: Larry Coryell, Sun-Ra, Hugh Masekela, Miles Davis.

<< It was obvious Jimi was going into serious music at the time they murdered him >>

Most definitely he was!...... Interesting choice of words there Captain ("they murdered him").

<< Jimi took correspondence courses at Berklee College of Music in Boston?

I don't know whom he studied under, nor how long he took the course
for. He started somewhere in January '70. I do know that it was the 'Arranging & Compostion' class........ By the way Kirk, if i didn't say so before, GREAT job you're doing on this board!!

Hotep Captain,

<< your Fan club period, when & why you've seen jimi , in studio or gigs >>

As I previously stated, I was in the official Hendrix fan club for Warner/Reprise records, while in Performing Arts H.S.... We seen Jimi many times either before or after a Record Plant session & 3 times at Ladyland, including the opening party. We also were at quite a few jam sessions he attended. In concert, we seen him every time he performed on the East Coast & some mid Western gigs. I still have vivid memories of packing around 20 of us in a small van, getting stoned, taking an incredibly long ride somewhere out of state to see him. We usually dressed like him when we did see him, like the kids do today for a Madonna or Britney Spears concert. Most of his gigs we got in free just by flashing our fan club buttons at the front door (like news reporters...LOL) or giving the guy at the door a half once of weed, etc. There is a pic on my site from 1969 with me dressed like Jimi, taken in back of a Village club he was jamming at. It was taken in the morning when folks were clearing out of the club. The police had just shut the jam down..... A few times on his way to Harlem or the Village, he would drive by the H.S. in his Corvettes, which was located on W.46th Street/Times Square, park in front & hang out on the steps of the H.S., which back then was a cool hang out spot for the freaks in the school. Jimi was going with a girl whose sister also attended the H.S..... I doubt if the guy even knew most of our names in the fan club, but he always acknowledged our presence with a nod or a big smile.... His most memorable question to us all when he usually saw us: "Yall still playing?"

<< have u been quoted in univibes and if yes which number ? >>

Nahhh.....Univibes & other mags interviews FAMOUS players regarding Hendrix. I'm the guy who ain't made it yet. They wouldn't be interested in anything I have to say about Jimi.

<< How old were u ? >>

Hhhmm, I'm not good at math.... I'm 51 now. I guess I was around 16-19 years old. I joined the fan club in my sophmore year. Most of my time at school then, I was incredibly stoned (LSD, Mescaline, Hash), & almost NEVER attended the academic classes, only the music classes, something I'm not too proud of.... & I'm still trying to figure how I made it through H.S. & 3 years of college without being left back!!

<< Did u met Bette MMAbry or Devon Wilson ? >>

Not personally... Betty I saw a few times at Mile Davis' townhouse parties, which she hosted & one time at a Jimi jam session. I have a luscious memory of her at one of those parties walking around topless (mmmmmmm!!!). Devon was around him alot of the times I saw Jimi. She usually showed up with lots of prostitutes, groupies & strippers (all of them high & ready for action), so we used to love to see her arrive on the set. Most of the famous folks associated with Jimi we seen or at one point talked to. One guy that we usually "bumped heads" with was Velvert Turner. He used to consider himself Jimi's bodyguard & seemed to get off kicking us out from either a session or backstage. I talked to him over the phone in '97, a few years before he died, after he had just come off the road backing up Al green. He stopped playing guitar & was a drug counselor in Upstate NY. He didn't remember me until I reminded him of those early Jimi days. Then we both had a good belly laugh!!.......I was simply a teenager back then, but I did follow to the letter the advice my head music teacher told me when he found out I was seeing alot of Jimi. He said to be a "concious observer" & diligently take notes. Something I'm glad I sticked to, even tho' I was drugged out!!

<< Did u know that Jimi's grandparents were doing a traveling minstel show ???? >>

Now that's something I did not know! It doesn't surprise me tho'. His father was in some grand circles while he was a pro dancer.

Again......during that time, it didn't seem like I was around someone of mega importance as Jimi Hendrix. It wasn't until a few years after he died & I started paying attention to the hype surrounding him that I realized what had previously happened. Back then I was a Black guy hanging around White hippies, so I was trying to be "White". That's real & I admit it!! I used to go see Mark Farner (Grand Funk), Terry Kath (Chicago), Zep, Beck, Clapton, Winter, etc., & say to myself "these guys are gods". Jimi to me then was of course famous & did cool things with the guitar, but he was still a "Black guy". This was my thinking back then, which of course I have since grown out of....... I remember seeing Sly wipe the floor with Jimi when he opened for Jimi at the Filmore & really considering trying to join Sly's camp!! When I was around Jimi, he wasn't the Jimi from "Monterey". He was more laid back. I remember him being depressed & melancholy alot. Like something was always on his mind bothering him, even tho' he would smile & laugh.

It's interesting to see how life makes us who we are!

In 1976 there was a "Jazz Rock Festival" in south France , organized by the "michael Lang"(yes the one from miami pop & woodstock), oh man it was such a drag they did this on a race track (sponsorized by the greatest Alcohol dealer in France), 3 days of dust . The first time i've seen the luma , that strange camera going in every dir'ections, oh yes they videotaped the whole thing , i've nver seen one picture of this................
Well , i've seen Pat Martino trio, Larry corryell & 11th house, Automatic man, Shakti, Joe Beck, Magma 'french), Stuff & joe cocker (completly drunk), AND Betty Davis and a funk band : i will never forget that experience 'coz they were so HENDRIXISH, wow the guitar player blew my mind . Betty was almost topless singing heavy sex lyrics ( would u shut off the lights, mmmmmmmmm, SHUT OFF THE LIGHTS , oouaaaahhhhh) and going have a SNORT backstage every 2 songs .........................

Hey Cap'

Wow... I can't believe you were at that France festival!!.... Right after the festival, Downbeat Mag did an article about it, saying generally it was a "nightmare", altho' there were some pristine performances from Coryell, Shakti & Martino, all 3 among my favs!

At that period, Betty was actually playing lots of shows in NYC here & most of the songs in her set were either Hendrix songs or Hendrix-style songs, which I found interesting since her albums are more hard Sly Stone sounding with Hendrix-style solos. I do give her respect tho' for being among the earliest "funkateers", & not just female but male as well, something she is VERY rarely given credit for........... Man, I'm still waitin' for some vintage porn with her in it to turn up somewhere. I just know she had to be into that!!... LOL... What a sexy lady!!!!

Hey Salty,

Glad you found the info interesting!

No, I haven't been in touch with any of the other members since I went to college in '71. In fact, I haven't been in touch with any H.S. colleagues as well. To my knowledge the club disbanded in the winter of '70. It's strange that after Jimi died, many who knew him were paranoid & flat out denied any association with him. Henderson speaks a little about this in his book. It was with good reason tho' because many who did know him died mysteriously or just disappeared.

Well Bleu for once i can talk about this strange event : as a commune of aspiring young musicians (i am fifty by now) we had only a 4 hours ride to get there. Since 68 France too had some "hooligans" kind of : Free Music for the people, destroying things & fighting with the cops so the race track were highly secured but once you get in it was : "do whatever you want".
We arrived the first day in the afternoon , bands were playing since the morning, this first day music stopped at 4 A.M till 10 A.M, then music during 48 hours. At that time i was listening only rock'n roll & some stuff i liked without really knowing what it was ( Gato Barbieri, Mc Laughlin, the first Weather report, Alex ligertwood playing with french musicians)but i remember we all being quite dubitatous about the name they gave : Riviera Jazz Rock Festival, for us average "hippies" it was like "oh man what does mean this rip off ". Anyway i've been highly experienced , i remember being stuck in front of the stage with a friend , just a few people standing in a sea of sleeping bags watching Pat Martino trio like ..............
i was not really into jazz but he blew my mind.
The second evening this band called "Stuff" (may be Steve gadd, eric gale joe sample i am not quite sure ) tore the racetrack down . And the M.C who was french ( a rock producer & sound engineer whos had been implied in 1968 rock Festivals in France : Amougies & Biot both half disasters -see Frank Zappa memories from amougies festival) did a lethal mistake :
while the crowd was asking for encore he came with Michael Lang, saying Michael was the guy behind woodstock, that we all were living something really special ( uh , we were absolutely sure of NOT ), and the Band will be back tomorrow with Joe Cocker as a singer. From this very moment (you know crowds) everybody didn't listen anymore to any bands , just waiting for this hypothetical woodstock, things went bad some guys robbed Movie related gear , each time the M.C was speaking english he was throwed beer bottles (some full of sand), stones with the crowd booing : speak in french Motùùùù..ker. 4 PM STUFF came on stage and started playing just like the night before, audience went really aggressive heckling for Joe Cocker who came on stage ABSOLUTELY DRUNK , he didn't finish the third tune. Well i don't remember how things went quiet . I must tell you that the psylocibin we scored there was one of the freshest and purest i've eat, this along with acid ... but i do remember clearly this last night , not far from the stage , and the stage were not that high, Shakti, then Bette Mabry,
Yes maybe as a little frenchy this have been my first exposure to REAL FUNK, oh man the clavinet guy he was so wild, the drummer he was so wild, Oh the Guitar player he was dressed as le Baron Samedi , and really some flashy colors along with his dark suit, he was playing on an oriental rug a Marschall with a les Paul. And there she was exsuding sex on high heels plaform boots , she was damn looking like CRUMB love to do big black girls (if u see whadda mean). If you get the hold on the movie we can set up a trade........... Wink

Hey Cap,

Do you happen to know anything about another jazz festival that took place in France in the year 1977?
I read Betty Davis performed there as well, along with Gil Scott Heron
and other acts.
Betty Davis peformance at 'Le Castellet' in July 1976 was broadcasted by French radio. I got a CDR of that show, but sound quality is rather poor.
Length is ca. 20 minutes. You write Betty performed one time during the 3 days festival, is that correct?
There a pretty cool article on Betty Davis in the Feb. 2005 issue of Mojo magazine.

Let me know if you're interested in a CDR of Betty Davis live at 'Le Castellet'. My email is jvburger@zonnet.nl
