Last night's show at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta was amazing! In addition to material from Lifeboat, the set included Zappa's Zoot Allures, Beck's 'Cause We've Ended as Lovers and Sophie and Zeppelin's No Quarter. The band was astounding and Jimmy's tone was simply beautiful.
I'll say it again, DON'T MISS THIS SHOW!!!!

It certainly is rare for such an all-star lineup. This band is likely to be one that be talked about for some time.

Sure, no problem. Saw this tour on opening night in Greenville, SC then the next night in Athens, GA. I'll be at the Atlanta show tomoprrow night. Tours with this magnitude of players are rare these days and I want to see as much of it as I can. If at all possible don't miss this one!

I spent some time with Jimmy and Rush Anderson when Jimmy was getting his rig together for this tour. We spent about 6 hours at a local rehearsal studio trying different combinations. Jimmy is using a mid 60s Super Reverb brain which has been removed from the original cabinet and placed in a "head" enclosure. Jimmy did this because he couldn't get the Tone Tubby speakers he likes to fit into the orginal Fender combo unit. The magnets were too big. He had a custom cabinet built which looks like an old Fender unit which houses 4 10 inch Tone Tubby speakers. This unit is run completely dry. Jimmy takes a line out from the "head" and goes into an Ernie Ball volume pedal, then into a new Fuchs reverb pedal. The volume pedal allows him to control the reverb level which goes into the "wet" rig. This rig is a new Fuchs Clean Machine head which powers a 4x12 Tone Tubby cabinet. Using the volume pedal he can bring in as much wet tone as he feels is needed (more for clean shimmery chords and less for overdriven lead sounds). Going into the front of the Super is another EB volume pedal and a Hughes and Kettner tube overdrive unit. That's it. It is amazing the amount of tones he can coax from this pretty basic rig.
I was very surprised to see Jimmy using a tremolo bar. He has really taken to it well and produced some great Jeff Beck style flutters and Holdsworth type legato swoops into notes. He is playing mostly his trusty custom shop Strat with the 2 Seymour Duncan 59 pick ups but also received a new custom shop strat built to his spec with the Fender noiseless pick ups, roller nut and of course the Dunlop 6000 ultra jumbo frets.

Thanks for the review. Can you describe his rig please? After listening to the first show, I'm curious the guitar and rig he is using. As you mentioned, he has a tremelo now. He sometimes gets tone just like Allan Holdsworth, and of course, he's doing some silimar lines with the legato thing like Holdsworth as well. So I suspect he may have a different drive pedal or amp or guitar or all of the above. Thanks!

I saw the first show of the tour Apr 24 posted on bt.etree.org. It's great quality audio and Jimmy is amazing. He's adding a slightly different style, a little more Holdsworth type of thing. It's very nice. I highly recommend the show.

What a blast! The Cox Capitol Theater is a beautiful little place in downtown Macon, and even though I only live about 30 minutes away (in Robins) I've never been there before. When I found out about the show I got together with a couple friends and got the second table back from Jimmy, they were excellent seats! I also have to mention that the $6 chicken tenders I got was huge and far better than expected.

I couldn't even begin to give a setlist but I would say I heard most (if not all) of the album. I was also thrilled to hear their take on one of my favorite Zappa songs "Zoot Allures"! Jeff is absolutely amazing! He could have sat in with Zappa anytime, and Jimmy broke out his flashy white strat for it as well...

This is the first time since the days of ARU in the early 90s that I have seen these 3 guys onstage together and it was magnificent! The band was smiling and really seemed to be enjoying theirselves, and it showed in the playing. The playing was spectacular, it easily ranked up there with "Return To Forever" and "Zappa Plays Zappa" as one of the most musically gratifying concerts I've ever seen. If they are playing near you, don't miss it!

The only disappointing part of the night was not being able to get an autograph. I have this great photo of Jimmy and Derek Trucks playing together at Macon's 5th of July music fest in 1999; Derek signed it years ago and I've been waiting quite a few years for the opportunity to get Jimmy to sign it. Seems they were in a hurry to rush everyone from this venue to another one down the street where Luther Dickinson of North Mississippi All-stars was playing with a few other big names, it was rumored that Jimmy would get onstage and he probably did. Unfortunately duty calls and since I have to work tomorrow I couldn't pull a late nighter. Things have changed a little since the days of ARU at The Cotton Club and chatting with Jimmy while he packed his own equipment up at the end of a 3 hour Col. Bruce show...

saw the band last night in savannah and these guys are bringing it. its total jazz rock and just in your face improving. jimmy really sounded amazing maybe the best tone ive ever heard. his chops were outstanding, very fluid and even was using the whammy bar a bit.
everybody else also played their asses off as well. they did covers ,zappa, mahavisnu orch. and a couple tunes i didn't know. any body know the set list. played some tunes from the cd and finished with scapegoat blues. brought the house down on that one.... this is a show worth seeing if your into seventies fusion style of music. it was great fun and jimmy was smiling all the way. this is his music, this is the stuff he grew up on. i feel i got to see the real jimmy herring this time around. not a jam band player, but as an artist stretching out and really expressing himself..

Does anybody know if Jimmy has allowed or even been asked about whether his shows will be allowed to be taped and distributed on archive.org? I guess he knows about it because there's a lot of him on there already! Living in the UK i'm not going to be able to go to any but i'd really like to hear a couple of shows.

i don't know the chords on the songs mentoned but the use of chord scales seems to be the way he is going. its has completely changed my way of thinking. jimmy is in a guitar player back this summer showing chord scales in the key of F if i remember correctly. the song Trancients is from chord scales in the key of G.
you can take the C major scale start with C add F then B then E then A all in the third posistion then move to D then G then C then F then B in 5th posistion and go up the neck............this is how i look at chord scales and i believe he does too. check out March 9 youtube lesson on the Jimmy Herring search. the diminish approach. makes great sence and i now use it im my composistions and playing

Hi all,

My first time posting on this awesome forum, really looking forward to seeing some of the Lifeboat transcriptions soon! I was just wondering if anybody knows some of the chords that pop up a lot in Jimmy's playing, in particular i'd actually love to know the three chords that lead into the chorus in 'One Strut'. Any of the jazzy dissonant sounding chords from the ARU would be great as well. I really want to learn some of those songs (particularly the chords he uses with the volume swells on songs like 'Planet Earth') but my ear and my knowledge of chords isn't good enough to just pick them out from recordings Cheers!

Sorry I kinda disappeared for a bit. I have been working on the melodies for "Only When It's Light". If I can figure out a way to clean up my messy notes, I will scan and present. I really want to make sure the fingerings are realistic as well. If anyone is aware of tab software for mac, let me know!!!!!
I have not stopped listening to Lifeboat since I got it. This guy is truly amazing. Between him and Scott Henderson, my head is always spinning.
