Bm>G6/9>F#7#9

so on the fretboard using chord tab
[7 9 7 7 7 7] Bm
[x 10 9 9 8 x] G6/9

Subject: Elaborated
Topic Replies: 1

I am approaching not to jest at your approach but to elaborate on the idea of chord building.

Using thirds in the manner you describe is perfectly right, normal yet simple. It is important to be able to think in those terms; displaying your roots on strings 6 through 3.

I mean to say that you want to know how to make Maj, min, dim, Aug chords using the 6th, 5th 4th or 3rd string as your root. To elaborate, you also need to be able to figure the fingerings and shapes for added chord tones like sus4ths, 6ths, 7ths, 9ths, 11ths, and 13ths.

Here is where things get tricky. It is necessary to know each chord in the scale, keeping the root on the same string. I.E. in G major
[3 2 0 x x x] G, [5 3 2 x x x] Am, [7 5 4 X X X Bm etc. You also want to find these same triad notes in the same position.

Now when you have figued up all of these triad shapes, try to figure all the chords of the scale in all 5 positions up the neck starting on the roots of each chord. Then add those extra tones (7ths 9ths etc) and figure in those new tones into the shapes.

Dont forget about inversions!!! Ex. C major = CEG
Inversions of C would be to rearrange the notes and how they are voiced
You could result in EGC, ECG, GEC, GCE, CGE etc. Now the task of finding these new shapes for all chords in the scale in the same positions for ease of playing by moving with economy. Then add some 7ths and 9ths and find those inversions.

A lot of the best shapes to work off of are the A, G, and C shaped bar chords both for Major and Minor. E shape is a given.

After all is learned, start playing the chords melodically and drop tones while adding others i.e. for C7 #9 try finding shapes for the notes E Bb and D#. We drop C and G and added E and Bb. Find the inversions and you will start to better understand the organization of the chord tones. Playing these melodically with scale patterns and riffs as your glue will prove to be a great approach to inside or safe playing. Well... i say safe but it is fun and necessary and full of depth for great playing. But in no way does this include outside ideas as a whole.

Hope this helps with 3rds etc.

I should start a new thread but will touch on a couple of more harmonic theory ideas...
Try to investigate chords built using 4ths or using a mixture of 4ths and 3rds. You can even add M7ths to spice things up
i.e. CFAD this could be analyzed as being a shell of a number of different chords and tonalities. Like Dm/C or an F6 chord.
i.e. F#BC#F# followed by ADEA= [x x 4 4 2 2] to [x x 7 7 5 5 ]
This progression again can be analyzed a number of different ways depending on melodic tonality or the bass note (perceived root or 3rd)

quartal and quintal harmonies are more flavorful and have neater applications and open the door to new melodic opporunities.

Yadda yadda blah blah blah Yadda yadda blah blah blah blah blah blah yada dydaydayady Yadda yadYadda Yadda yadda blah blah blah Yadda yadda blah blah blah blah blah bYadda yadda blah blah blah Yadda yadda blah blah blah blah blah bYadda yadda blah blah blah Yadda yadda blah blah blah blah blah blYadda yadda blah blah blah Yadda yadda blah blah blahblah blah blah blah blah blah yada

Good luck and hope this helps

I cannot recommend highly enough Scott Henderson's DVD on Jazz Fusion Improvisation; lots of triad/pentatonic/substitution useful info... I got the VHS version years ago and wore it out.

Jimmy loves mids. Crank the mids on whatever amp or pedal you might be using to get closer to his sound. EQ can be tricky and is very room-dependent.

The earlier advice about getting a quality tube amp is good. The Fender Hot Rod is pretty good, especially with a Celestion G12-65 speaker (or a clone) in there; I was surprised when I heard one of those set up that way!

Hot (high output) pickups are not always best imo, especially if you like & use true amp distortion. Jimmy & Derek both use Seymour Duncan HBs with a moderate output. Jimmy uses the 59's for sure. I have a solidbody Artist and changed the stock pickups to 59's and love 'em.

Don't forget about speakers! You can get good deals on used speakers sometimes. I just scored a used Tone Tubby ceramic 12" for $75. Eminence makes hempcone speakers using TT cones also. You also can't go wrong with Celestion G12M-25s (Greenbacks) or G12-65s or one of the clones, just watch out for amp vs. total speaker wattage so you don't blow a speaker.

Also, Jeff Beck and Derek never use a pick ever (Beck did years ago).

Good luck!

Couple of points:

the amp is pretty weak. although I'm sure you can get a decent tone from it, I'd recommend moving on. All these players you've mentioned are using high quality tube amps, generally of the vintage variety. Derek Trucks is using PRS amps occasionally but I'm sure he's still jamming his old blackface Fenders. consider spending a little money to get a good amp now...that would really help. you can get some cash if you sell your amp, too. the reissue blackface Fender Princeton Reverb might be a good choice. take your guitar to a large store and try a bunch of different amps with different settings (low and high gain, diff EQ and presence settings, etc).

consider rewiring your pickups so that you can tap the coils of your humbuckers to effectively utilize them as single coils. many of the players you mention are playing strats so that may be part of it.

I think there are 3 main components to an electric guitar's sound:

1) your fingers and forearm strength
2) the pickups
3) the amp

You might argue strings but unless you're using flatwounds they all sound pretty similar to me. Working on finger strength and vibrato is more important than trying a bunch of different brands or gauges of strings IMHO.

Pickups have a strong influence over how an amp reacts because of their different output levels. Hot pickups, especially humbuckers, make an amp break up in a beautiful, warm tone that always reminds me of the Allman Bros (especially the neck pickup location). Loud single coils are nice because they can hit the preamp of the amp hard. Single coils tend to have a bit more treble jangle in the tone, especially if you use the out-of-phase pickup selections. This out-of-phase sound is especially popular with blues players like SRV.

good luck and try not to blame the gear.

The tune is in 6. Jimmy calls the chords Bb7#9, Bb/B, then Abm6(#5). He's using the same shapes and changing the bass notes according to the video.

I think he's pretty clear in the video (second link in my 2 posts above). Almost everything is diminished which is, IMHO, his specialty.

Okay, I've been screwing with my sound for a long time and I just can't get it where I want it. I really like the sound of Jimmy Herring, Derek Trucks, Jeff Beck, etc. They all have a very full, sharp kind of sound. I can't pin point what I need to do. I realize that a lot of it is in their hands but beyond that I still can't get close enough. When I get the sharp sustained notes I seem to lose something on articulation and attack.

Anyhow, here's what I have to work with:

Main guitar is an Ibanez Artist (semi-hollow) two hum's.
Amp is a Fender Hot Rod (40 watt tube - I only use the clean channel which gives me High, Mid and Low eq, reverb and presence)
Distortion - Rat
That's about all I use. I also have a DBX Phase 90 and a Boss EQ-7. Most of the sites I've looked at say that Jimmy uses a fender twin (or some variation of fender amp) and Ibanez Tube Screamer. Not much else so I've kinda put the others aside. Anyhow, does anyone have some advice as to how to get a nice tone from the above? Any and all thoughts are appreciated!
Thanks!

Hi all. Fairly new to the site, first time posting. Really loving most of the threads and ideas posted.

I would like to see if anyone has played around with "Lifeboat Serenade" yet and wanted to share what they've found.

I've begun to work on the chord changes so far and want to get the chord/key changes before I try any heads.

This tune is so cool, but then again so is the entire album. Also really would like to learn "Only When It's Light" if anyone has worked out that tune yet.
