The legendary Hampton Grease Band— the first in a long line of experimental rock groups fronted by Col. Bruce Hampton (ret.) — will reunite for the first time in 33 years at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta Georgia on Friday June 2nd.
The group’s only release was the 1971 double album Music to Eat, often ‘hailed’ by Hampton as the second worst selling double album in Columbia Records history (second only to a yoga instructional record).
In the late 1960s and early 1970s Hampton Grease Band shared the stage with Frank Zappa, Grateful Dead [ link ] and the Allman Brothers. It was the Grease Band that served as the impetus for much of Col. Bruce’s antics throughout the years.
The band will perform material from Music To Eat, and who knows what else, at the Variety show.
The lineup will feature all four surviving original members:
Bruce Hampton, vocals
Glenn Phillips, guitar
Mike Holbrook, bass
Jerry Fields, drums
and (filling in for the late Harold Kelling) Bob Elsey of the Swimming Pool Q’s on guitar.
