Just noticed the great Johnny A Registry photo of JA necks at the Gibson Custom Shop and have a question. Are those long neck tenons on the base of the neck, or are they jigs for ease of handling?

If so, it might explain the fantastic sustain those guitars are capable of.
If they are not long tenons, maybe one of you guys can explain why JA's can do the sustain thang so well.

As the photos suggest, the JA's do have a long tenon. I have seen the process at the Custom Shop. You may see another photo on the JAR (Johnny A Registry) one of these days that shows the neck inside the neck-pickup cavity that will answer your question. But if you want an authority on the JA, you will have to wait for ChrisA to post his answer. The new Les Paul Chambered Reissues (Cloud 9's) are based on the same design and they have the same or more sustain with a better midrange tone than the "normal" LP. Check out www.cloud9guitars.org

YES. The JA's do indeed have a long neck tenon!

Hi, regarding the question on the length of the neck tenons, I'm pretty confident those necks are just waiting for a final finish sanding on the tenons before being completed. I don't think any more wood was going to be removed from those necks. Hope you enjoy that kind of photo...more to come on the JAR.

Hey Chris, do you still have that photo of the JA necks awaiting finish at the Custom Shop? It's disappeared from this thread. I'd like another look at those long tenons.

Confused
