Hello Landau experts,

i am a working musician from germany (desperately) trying to find out how Mike uses his OD boxes. Please help me guys !
- Is his amp set clean (lets say his pro reverb or even dc 30) ?
- which of the two pedals is the main overdrive and which is the boost ?
- since I do not know the cot50, how would you describe the sound ?
(more OCD or BoR or Rat or TS or anything else..)

thanks so much & best regards

If I'm not mistaken, he is only using the Cot50 and Sd9 combo with his cleaner amps, like fenders and so on. He still uses the Voodoo1 and Sd9 with both his Od100 and Marshall amps.

The Cot is the basic lite dirt/plexi sound and the Sd9 is used for the more gainer sounds. He also uses them together a lot for the lead sounds.

hmm tough call since there are many different versions of the Lovepedal COT50 and they all sound slightly different, and it is now replaced by the Amp50.

In general it sounds like a beefy cranked old Marshall in a box, well at least that's whats closest. All the COT50s add some volume and some treble, which lead to the 3-button COT50 with an added Tone and Volume knob (which to my ears is the least attractive sounding of all versions).

Hope that helps

Thanks guys for your replies !

so is the cot50 is comparable to the ZVex BoR ?
I tried stacking the Maxon SD9 and the box of Rock (to be exact: distortron) and it simply was too much of a bassy midscooped sound. i found it easy to emulate the BoR with the SD9 to my surprise. (even liked the SD9 better).
i think that the SD9 and (any) Tubescreamer work great together.

how is the voodoo-1 ? I heard it is more of a fuzz. could a rat get close ?

Thanks again

During Eros Ramazzotti's last tour Mike was using the Fargen head (I believe it's called Blackbird or something) so it was a clean sound plus sd-9 and cot50.

The sound the cot gives is in one simple word "raw". It adds volume, highs and punch. It is not the right pedal if you're looking for something that does not color your original tone. It's a screaming beast and the only way to manage it is your guitar's volume and picking hand Cool

If you are into simple things and touch sensitive stuff this is the right tool.

I'd say it is a plug and play pedal, it can be raw and screaming or quite and sweet.

thanks resha,

i need to check out this pedal. scott henderson plays it as well.
unfortunately on the lovepedal website it is not listed. discontinued ??
seems i have to haunt for a amp 50 pedal
btw i think the fargen blackbird is a fender blackface (vibrolux?)clone

cheers and thanks

yeah the COT50 in every form is discontinued, the follow up is the Amp50 which sounds not quite the same, but it sounds ok. Try one and see what you get of it. It's definitely not a "bedroom" pedal, the more amp-volume you have the better it gets.

Again - I really appreciate your help !
From what i have read i will stick with my current setup (80ies Rat-SD9-Effects)
for a while before my next purchase. I keep coming back to those pedals somehow they work in almost every situation. I play into fairly clean amp (modded bassman 50 top) i was just curious if mike plays into a clean amp as well. now i feel a bit more encouraged to keep using what i am using - if that makes sense ....

cheers & all the best

For the Renegade creation album, Mike used a Suhr Badger Head with the COT50, SD-9 and Lovepedal Eternity "FUSE". And the Badger is no clean amp..

Yea, I read the review too, but then again... this is in the studio, which is a whole different ballpark compared to a Live situation. I don't think Mike has a rule of thumb or anything, but from my Knowledge the Cot50/Sd9 combo is with clean amps at least when playing live.
He didn't mentioned if the gain was set clean or dirty with the Badger. I owned the 30watt version for a year or so. It was a great amp. The Fuse is a pedal I would love to try one day, but at the moment I'm happy with what I got.

Here are some clips with him using the Cot and SD9 throughout the videos.

That's totally true: working with cot+sd9 in front of an overdriven amp creates way too much gain. I always use them separately, the cot for solos and the sd9 for rhythm.

If the amp is set clean the situation changes Smile

Really?
I would probably use it backwards. Then again, I'm not a heavy Rhythm guy.
I would use the Cot as that good Plexi sound and the SD9 the same way I do with the OD100 Cl+. As a booster for those saturated moments.

I find the sd9 really dark sounding and we all know that the tone knob is not usable above 9 o'clock. The overall headroom I can get with it is pretty small if compared to the cot which has a lot more "hair" so to my ears the solo does not come out as well as with the cot...

But this could be referred to my setup. I have dark sounding pickups (kinman woodstock plus) and prefer bass centered tones for my guitar... Neutral

On Rio das Ostras Jazz & Blues Festival 2010 video, He seems to be using Cot for Rhythm and SD-9 for solo.
He steps two times before soloing so that's for sure.
But when he plays heavy stuff he might be using both together at same time.

But...

Have everybody tried both on in a same time?
I have tried before and it sounds to mushy and trebly...
