|

Everybody always requests Pride & Joy, which is a great song, but I would always rather do Texas Flood or Cold Shot. At the last gig, where I put together a bass player and drummer - two friends for a sort-of one-time-only deal, we did Couldn't Stand the Weather. It's a really tough song to do without another rhythm player, but we pulled it off - at least the crowd loved it! I've also played Stang's Swang with a bigger band that had another guitarist, a killer sax player, and a great B-3 player. That was terrific, but it's a really tough song, especially on the drummer! I really wanted to do Ain't Gone 'N' Give Up On Love, but we didn't have time for any rehearsals, so we had to keep the more complex stuff out. That's not a terribly tough song to play until you get to the bridge, and then it's got that key change... I didn't want a total train wreck, so we skipped it.

We were going to do Testify, but ran out of time. I'd love to do Willie the Wimp or Lenny. I forgot, in the big band, we always did Riviera Paradise and Chitlins Con Carne. I've done Mary Had a Little Lamb a thousand times, too. |

pretty much all the Stevie tunes that were a little more complex were the ones that interested me. I never really got in to doin the "Pride N Joy" or "Texas Flood" thing. "Change It" was always my favorite to play out of all the ones we did. |

Although I'm a little embarassed to say, I've lost count of the SRV tunes my band have covered over the years . Off the top of my head:
Obvious ones
Texas Flood
Pride and Joy
Little Wing
Voodoo Chile (Last 2 both Hendrix I know but we play the SRV versions)
Others:
Cold Shot
I'm Leaving You
Mary had a Little Lamb (my favourite!)
The Sky Is Crying
Come On
Lenny
Riviera Paradise
Scuttle Buttin'
Couldn't Stand the Weather
Tightrope
Chitlins Con Carne
Leave My Little Girl Alone
Testify
Rude Mood
So Excited
House is a Rockin'
Tin Pan Alley
Superstition
And this is just what I can remember right now!!
Call me obsessive if you wish.
In my defense we never played more than 3-4 in one night we kept them on constant rotation to keep things interesting all round. |

Is it just me or is Ain't Gone 'n' Give Up On Love really hard to sing and play? |

I don't do a lot of SRV while playing out, we try and do or own stuff mixed in with covers, a lot of Chicago Blues stuff. When we do some SRV, it's, leave my girl alone and sky is crying.
I do have fun playing around with Say What. |

Most of us on this forum can probably do a good Stevie impression; but you must admit Stevies voice was very good. Unfortunately I can do a very good Robert Plant, but Stevies vocal vibrato is something else; much lower and harsher. I suspect his vocal influence was Howlin Wolf, but I hear Bobby Bland in there.
If anyone thinks they can do a vocal like Stevie's on Tin Pan Alley or Ain't gone by all means post a link; I'd be intrigued. |

Sorry as this post was awhile ago,but this is with the srv talks aswell or not,or just as a long instrumental?,and was it relay long too, this is my favourite srv tune.
Another thing i herd in the studio he said he used two wah wah pedals on this tune, but live it dose not realy look like he use's it maybe?,or did he mean just swtiching the device on and getting the sound, like what was the equipment or effects if you know exactly he used to get that sound, like just all his effects on,like the tube screamer must be for those high notes, and im shure its going all through his fender vibratone amp too, thanks. _________________ Christopher X |
