He (and the person who owned it before him) played the s**t out of it. That's good old fashioned wear-and-tear.

do they know who owned the guitar before him. anyways wouldnt want to meet them in a dark alley at night.....with what they did to that thing

Once the original neck on Number one could not take another refret he replaced it with the neck from Red.
This was the neck that was crushed when stage equiptment fell on it. It was replaced with non fender neck and when stevie died, the original neck was put back onto number one.
So judging stevie's age in that picture i'd say it's the original neck which took some serious torture.

You may want to check my info, i might be confused
