I'm Thomas a french fan of SRV, and I'm trying to get some tricks from
the way SRV plays. I watched lot of different live and concert and I'm
still wondering how he can hit the strings like this. I know he played
with very strong set (something like 12-53, is that right?) but when I
play with such set and then if I try to hit the strings like he does, I
usually break one of the "high" strings (G4, B4 or E5). So I realised
that the choice of my pick was very important! I use picks like 65 to
70 mm but if it's higher I can't play like Stevie! I noticed that
guitarists like Yngwie Malmsteen uses strong picks, steve vai uses
middle picks (I think?) what about joe satriani, I don't really know. So I deduced that you have to use strong picks to play very fast and it is true that this is very hard to play very fast with a light pick... I need a confirmation!

It's been said that SRV used Fender Mediums or Fender Heavies.

I like mediums. I don't find it hard to play fast with mediums.

I like the way the give a little, but not too much. Gets the spongy sort of sound..

I also believe that SRV used the round edge of the pick, rather than the point. If this makes sense.

Here's what SRV said in a 1984 interview.

Quote:
I play with a pick and a finger. I used the round end of the pick, too. You break less of them and don't get tangled up in the strings. Sometimes I play with both together, or I'll palm the pick and use my fingers, or sometimes I'll just "Hubert" it [play with bare fingers a la Hubert Sumlin].

Yeah, I forgot to mention that!!

I use the round edge of the pick as well (my teacher taught me this when I first started playing). It's just more comfortable.

Good point Lee!

I may not be able to offer up any kind of advice on how to master Stevie's tone...I am not a player per se...but I think I have found the "secret" to Stevie's big tone............hope this helps. Wink
