Antone's In Heaven

As he stood at the steps into heaven
his eyes staring in thru the gate
he heard a loud voice from beyond him
asking "Why child...why do you wait?
You have nothing to fear once inside...
angels are waiting for you to take your place...
there's nothing but peace and love to surround you
yet I see caution on your road-weary face."
"I've seen your world many times over" said the man
"and I've traveled down roads near and far.
Good times and bad times and the loss of some friends
have come to pass for me and my timeless guitar.
I have some regrets and I've made some mistakes
and spent many nights face down on the floor.
I've reached out to lost souls and helped those that I could
But I somehow feel I should have done more."
"Not to worry my son...you've brought joy to the world
and given hope to the ones who have not yet been found.
Blessed are you and your beat up guitar
You've done my work thru your heavenly sound.
Still why do you stand here with your hat in your hand
did you not know your work there was done?"
the young man looked down to the case at his feet
and smiled as he plugged in his old # 1.
"It's time to come home and leave sorrow behind...
I'm just a simple blues man...I'm just Stevie Ray.
But I'd like to know one thing about your sweet promised land
Is there an Antone's and a stage where I can play?"

My brother Jimmie always said I played like I was breaking out of jail.
