Scott,

I was wondering if you had any stories that you would like to share with us about the late great Larry Coryell. Wasn't that gig you did in Atlanta last fall substituting for Larry due to his illness? I know you once mentioned Murali and praised his playing. Another great loss to the music world and another great guitarist gone too soon! RIP Larry.

Larry was a great musician and person, and I'm really sorry he's gone. I did that gig in Atlanta to sub for Larry when he was sick, but I don't know if his illness at that time had anything to do with his death.

I also know his son Julien, who took a few lessons from me and is a great player himself. He lives here in LA and I need to call him and offer my condolences.

Larry sat in with Tribal Tech a few times and it was always a blast when he played with us. Please bear with my poor typing abilities and check out the latest GuitarWank podcast - Bruce and I shared some great stories about him.

Just to put my 2 cents in - Larry's 11th House group didn't become as popular as Mahavishnu Orchestra or Return To Forever, but it's a fact that Larry was the first guy to incorporate jazz with distortion guitar, making him THE undisputed godfather of fusion.

I remember an article years ago where he transcribed The Creeping Terror and mentioned his son turned him on to it.. something like that.

I was very flattered when Larry wrote about me in his column, but that's the way he was. Jeff Berlin and I were just talking about how Larry would always promote young guitarists and try to help them. He was always very active in the guitar community and was truly unselfish in sharing what he knew with others.
