Scott, we all know you don't like being asked to comment other musician's work, but since you badmouthed Zorn, I try that question:
Do you think Marc Ribot is a guitaristic disaster, or do you wonder why he is doing this "thing" with Zorn (I personnally loved his Tom Waits and Elvis Costello collaborations, but here... it's different).
Thanks junkyard, I'm sure trying my best. Dizzy, I think jazz is just as stale as rock from a composing viewpoint. What's the weakest thing about all the clips posted on this tread? It's the writing in my opinion. The jazz musicians who could also write great music were never a large group in the first place, but now it seems like it's an art form completely overlooked by the new generation of jazz musicians. They're playing standards, Avant-garde music, or writing badly. There are exceptions but when it comes to fresh material, jazz in in the same place as rock.
It's stale because these m'fers aren't living their lives, they are practicing in their basement 23 hours per day.
There is nothing for them to get blue about, where are they going to get inspiration from.
Look at all the great songwriters, they always have some weird/f'ed up things happening to them.
In the early jazz days, it was mainly racism, alcoholism and heroin addiction.
Want to be a great composer, get hooked on heroin.
That is something to get blue about, just kidding. _________________ If it's true that our species is alone in the universe, then I'd have to say the universe aimed rather low and settled for very little.
