Obviously these are the “tried and true” mics for capturing guitar tones for MANY decades. I’ve heard people swear by other mics, Holdsworth LOVED his U87, I’ve read good things about other mics. A friend of mine LOVES the Equitek brand, I think he likes the 200 model but I could be wrong... BUT.... I’ve also read that NEW 57’s sound “different” than older 57’s. The older mics are reported as sounding “sweeter”. As hard as it is to verbalize what our ears hear, my GUESS, is that the older mics have less harsh frequencies...? Who knows...

Scott, have you found that to be true? Or is a Shure 57, a Shure 57? Hope that makes sense.

Best,
Chris

I hate to say this, and I'm not happy about it, but I bought a brand new 57 recently and took it back immediately. It sounded small, kinda harsh - very similar to a speaker which hasn't been broken in. I didn't have to break in my other 57's, so I have to assume that Shure has lost some quality control.

That being said, a friend of mine brought over some older 57's from the 80's and they didn't sound good at all, so I have no idea what to think.

There are people who put different transformers in 57's, making them sound better in different ways, but I haven't tried it.
