Hey Scott,

i really dig the new record. Big hats off to the compositions, arrangements and playing (by all).

What's your process when composing this material? How long does is take to complete a piece where you feel its ready to be recorded?

How do you convey/teach the music to the band - charts, tapes, jamming, etc? Do they have freedom to make up parts to a basic outline?

Where did you record it? Where basic tracks live, and did you do overdubs/solos at home?

Thanks, I know I'm asking a lot.

Thanks! The time it takes to compose a tune varies greatly - if I get lucky and hear everything I want, I can write a tune in a day. Other times I have to go through the process of elimination crap that we all hate, and then it can take a week. I like to play new music on the road for a few tours before recording it.

I make a recording of the composition sequence and give it to the guys, along with a bass chart. It's more of a blueprint, because we always come up with better ideas in rehearsal. There are parts that need to be played exactly to fit the melody, but there's always room to improvise.

We recorded live at Kingsize Soundlabs is LA, and then I did a lot of overdubbing and layering at home.

This makes so much sense not only from a musical perspective but from a business perspective as well.

When I first heard you guys perform "Sphinx" live, my reaction was "Christ on a bike! This new record is going to be epic¹º!"

At that point, there was no way I was not going to be (figuratively) camping out in front of the CD store the night before the release date.
