Man, a Showman is a serious amp! I love those things. It'll be interesting to hear what he thinks of it, after he's had a chance to get acquainted with it.

It's probably good for me there's a slow period on the forum. It'llgive me a chance to try and get some playing/listening in.

Welcome. You'll find that the traffic here tends to go up and down, usually with bursts occurring when Steve is off the road and home where he can post. He's on a pretty busy tour right now with MHB so I imagine we won't hear much from him till next month. One interesting tidbit he mentioned to me a few days before he left is that he acquired a blackface showman and was checking it out at MHB rehearsals. Not sure if he ended up taking it with him.

So, I posted a sort of "Introduction" in the What's New section. I live in the Little Rock, Arkansas area. Have been playing for about 24 years. Looking to start a new Band, soon. I won't repeat all of my "other" introduction, here. But, I'm joining tthis Forum to learn and share.
Glad to be here, and looking forward to the exchanges!

So, I "Discovered" Mr. Kimock through The Gear Page Forums.

And I am very intrigued by his posts. I want to learn about the "Music Theory" I have read him write about. It seems very interesting, to me.

So, I have read some of the posts here, and will be reading more. But, I need some help. So, you will be seeing me post with a lot of questions.

I feel pretty competent in traditional Diatonic Harmony. This is something I have learned, after playing guitar for awhile. At first, I always played Blues Scales over everything. It's the only one I knew. And my Ear was really ineffective. Now, I can use my Relative Pitch to "Pick Out" most anything. On a good "In The Zone" moment, I can go right to a note I hera/feel/or visualize, without thinking about it.

So, I feel that learning the Diatonic stuff has helped me to "Train" my ears, and to understand a lot more types of Music(s). However, something has been lacking.

When I knew the 1 Scale and had no Ear, I would just find a fretboard position that seemed to work for a tune, and I could make it work. My more experienced friends, who had better Ears, would often ask about my "Unique" note choices! LOL

The one thing I did have going for me (I think), was my Phrasing. I could twist my chosen "Scale" with bends, slides, etc., until it fit the tune. So, I feel my inexperience "helped" me to play things a more experienced player wouldn't think of.

Finally, I got to the point of wanting to learn more. That's when I finally found a great Instructor, and learned about Diatonic stuff. But, there are holes in everything. As it would seem, people on this Forum already know.

I can reconcile my Diatonic "knowledge" with my Blues knowledge. But, it is a twisted path. But, I want to understand better the 5 Limit, 7 Limit types of subjects. And I'm here to really dig in.

I'm a slow learner, and I have to really do the "Trial and Error" thing, to really "get it" with just about any subject. When I finally do get it though, I usually become pretty solid in the chosen subject. So, here's what I think I understand, so far:

Based on the Overtone Series, you will find a "Dominant 9th. Arpeggio" (for lack of a better term, at this point). This would validate the thoughts I have had on the use of so many "Borrowed Dominants", etc. types of Theories people use to explain something I have always found to be more "Natural". The things I've "learned" so far, have these patchwork styles of explanation. But what I had always heard was more cohesive. And this physical manifestation of the "Dom 9" in the Overtone Series, seems to point to more factual basis for "Folk" Musics. Which is what we heard around the house, when I was growing up.

And the 3rds. and 5ths. are what everything is based on? A "Spiraling Out" of 5ths. and 3rds.?

I have printed off a piece of a Thread from this Forum. And I am going to try to really take the Technique/Exercise to heart. Just to "get my feet wet", so to speak. It's the one SK mentioned in (I think this was the name of it) "A New Way To Understand Scales". The Example used an E7#9 "Hendrix Chord".

Anyway, I do plan on reading every post on this whole Forum. But, it will take me awhile. I need to soak things up for awhile, then re-read them, if I plan on really "getting it". But, if anybody here has a suggested "Plan Of Action", please chime in!

Okay, so, "Hello, glad to meet You!". And I'm looking forward to "Digging In"!

P.S.

Sorry for all of the Quotation Marks and Parenthesis', etc. But, I often over-use them in an attempt to cleaer in my posts.

So there's a new band in the works...I assume under the SK&F moniker. On rhythm and vocals is Bobby Lee Rogers...

Any idea as to tentative tour dates? Other members?

Hoping for a west coast run! Doubt they'll stop through LA, but if there's any LA to SF travel, it'd be great to setup a show here in Bakersfield...There'd be a happening crowd!

Oh, and if you wanted to put those up for sale on dsbd.net in 24 bit resolution, I know I would be most grateful. Heck, if you put up Eudominic in 24 bit, I'd buy that, for sure. Or any live shows. Not to be greedy, but since I dipped my toes in the 24 bit pool, it's really tough to even listen to MP3's any more. Which is as it should be. We should be moving forward with audio quality, not the other way around.

I'm also curious to see what you felt about the final mastered copy of the CD...I heard from a bird who worked on the mix that he wasn't pleased with how the master came out compared to the final studio mix, but that might not be on track with your own thoughts.

I have an HS-3 in the bridge & neck, and the HS-2 in the middle. I didn't want to get too Jerry-fied either, and the 2 is a nice compliment to the 3. You can get plenty of OTHER stuff out of them as well. From SRV to David Gilmour. Of course, not exactly, but pretty close. Especially the neck pup! Your best bet is to start trying them out. Lollars, Kinmans, Don Mares, there are many, many to check out.
Good Luck

I really want to get a new guitar, my budget is no higher than 2500. Im going off to college and supposed to be playing with a band that plays Lotus, phish, etc.

I am heavily influenced by all kinds of music. I really don't know what kind of guitar im looking for.

I almost got a cs 336 but i decided it was to much, i've been thinking about an sg and putting my pair of z-90s in them, the john scofield signature ibanez, 335s, es 137, or maybe a les paul.

I just want it to rock, and play jazz.

I would love to hear peoples opinions..

After maybe two years of debating, I finally bit the bullet and picked up an lxp-1! I'm having it sent in pretty soon for the mod, and I have one question regarding the MIDI switch capabilities: What kind of switch do you need or will work to turn it on/off in live settings? Thanks y'all!

Peace.

Well, the cabinet is finished and I had the chance to try it out in a live setting this past weekend. It's been finished for a while but the weather up here at 9000 feet has been too cool for the finish to cure, so I only recently brought the cabinet home with me (it's a clear finish, showing off the beautiful woods).

It's made of hickory with purpleheart trim around the edges (both front and back), and it's very striking. We'll try to post some pictures at some point. The purpleheart oxidized a bit when it was finished, so the color changed from the striking purple of the raw wood into a deep and vibrant (almost irridescent) cherry. I think Michael may have been disappointed by the color change but I think that it may even be better-looking this way, and it looks especially beautiful in the sunlight. The hickory also has a very nice grain to it and he did a beautiful job of dovetailing the joints. The grille cloth is identical to Fender stock cloth.

Now, to the specs - after thinking about what I need for an overall rig, I decided not to use a low-power speaker. It has a Randall Jaguar in it now, which is apparently a very transparent speaker and at 50 watts can handle more than my amp can send it. For the time being, that is what I want from a speaker until I feel that I'm familiar enough with the amp and cabinet that I start looking for additional color. Weber makes a 12 with an alnico magnet that is supposedly similar to the old Jensens but with more power than a P12N, so maybe I'll go there if I eventually decide to swap out the speaker.

The dimensions are like the Hot Rod Deluxe, but without the slant. This way, it stacks well with my amp so that I can conserve space both on stage and in the car. It has feet on two sides so that it can be used with either the long or short side on the floor. When the short side is on the floor, the speaker offset puts the speaker up higher, and that is how I used it the other night (I can't remember the exact offset details right now, but it is very similar to the specs Steve cited). The back panel has a rounded-off diamond cutout in it, similar to but a little smaller than the AC30 oval described above. We didn't get around to playing with the different back configurations, but we probably will at some point because we are both really enjoying the process of discovery with amp-related things. As it is now, there don't seem to be any uneven frequencies, and it's much richer sounding than the on-board speaker, in part I think because the cabinet resonates better than the amp enclosure. I did have to turn the bass down the other night to keep from encroaching on the bass player's frequency domain when using my neck pickup, so now I'm running with the treble, middle, and presence controls around 10 (of 12) and the bass down around 8. Running the tone pots really hot seems to give me much better harmonics and feedback, but when I had them all the way up the amp broke up just a litte bit more than I wanted so I backed them off slightly. I found that the neck pickup on my Strat was clear and fat (especially on the clean channel), and the bridge pickup nice and crisp without being brittle or harsh. I'm running the drive channel around 4.5, which gives it a nice bit of crunch as opposed to the heavy overdriven sound, and I've found that this is also one of the sensitive spots on this amp, as described by Steve in the thread on dialing in an amp. If I want a screaming distortion, I use my Roger Mayer Stone Fuzz.

Even though we didn't use the design Steve describes above, the information provided covered some very important basics and helped us work out what we needed for my rig, and I'm really happy with how it has turned out. It's both fatter and chimier than the on-board speaker, and just generally prettier sounding. For the first time I'm starting to feel like I'm getting a tone that I'm aiming for instead of trying to work around something that isn't quite there, and I think this will serve my needs very well. Thanks very much for the tips, Steve!

Did I mention that it's really pretty?
