For a while I've been recording more and more and noticing that my effects chain makes a ton of noise. I'm considering adding a noise gate. Do you guys use one and if so what brand?
what kind of noise are you getting? single-coil noise? pickup noise being amplified by gain-adding pedals? ground hum? noisy connections? noisy pedals?
i'd go with trying to eliminate the noise rather than gate it off, particularly for recording. if there's noise when you're not playing (which is all a gate will address), you can always cut that later in the mixing process. if there's background noise while you're playing, a gate won't help that and it will be hard/impossible to get rid of after the fact.
of course, how you get rid of the noise will depend on what kind of noise it is
