The bassist I'm playing with right now has a pianist/composer pal, apparently something of a genius-type, who has done a few of these. Steve has talked from time to time about the relation between spoken language and music. Think these are a great case in point.

This is such an interesting topic. I guess it's why I'm not a fan of some styles of guitar playing...I just don't listen that fast.

I was streaming an NPR program this afternoon, World Cafe. Not the one from two years ago with SKB, which I recommend. This one included David Bromberg, who studied with Rev. Gary Davis.

In the middle (36 minutes), Bromberg is asked by David Dye about solo construction. Bromberg explains that Rev. Davis' "guitar used to talk to him." He comments on the relationship between church preaching and music. In the African American church, "the preaching is extremely musical," says Bromberg. Hence, Davis' guitar spoke.
