The summer of 1974 in the apartment on Union Blvd in Bethlehem. Steve had a sweet little cat named Max. One day, Max got on the wrong end of a Pontiac (or was it a Buick?). It was a very sad moment, really. This is a piece dedicated to that sweet little creature. The first part is just a blues with a lot of interesting modulating (if I remember, he is using the extension speaker trick on the old Vibrolux to get the OD sound); the last half is a sort of tone poem that tries to capture the notion of Max's little soul finding its way in the cosmos. Somewhere in a box in my attic, I have the paragraph of prose that Steve wrote to accompany it. Recorded on a Sony sound on sound reel-to-reel.

So, at the expense of embarrassing my dear old friend a little, and in celebration of the 200th member and success of this wonderful discussion forum--even then, it was about connectedness:

Max's Blues

Thanks a lot Mike! This is really cool stuff. It almost sounds like a cat's meow at the beginning of the second part. Do you remember how the second part was made? Is that just feedback or were there effects involved? Is Steve playing both guitar parts on the beginning, more bluesy part of the track?

Thanks again!

Steve is playing on all tracks. The only effects are the echo on the tape machine and the reverb on the Vibrolux. The droning effect in the second part is done with a slide.

Oh yeah, there's that Roy B. influence again. Nice stuff.
