heres a question im sure has come up alot.....if you could have a supergroup of powerhouse musicians, living or dead who would they be?
My choice...
Guitar- Jimmy herring
Guitar- Guthrie Govan ( i believe that these two could duel solos for days without losing momentum and for that matter play the most harmonic music imaginable)
Keys- Thelonius Monk ( no need for an explanation)
Percussion- Either Stewart Copeland or Buddy Rich
Saxaphone - Charlie Paker( he would fit nicely in the outside instrumental jams)
Trumpet - Obviously Miles Davis (not many can match his substance when he plays)
Bass- Jaco ( his melodic playing can captivate audiences) |

this might be considered blasphemy to some of you but guthrie has gone beyond the limits of mastering the instrument...i am positive he could teach jimmy a thing or too, theres a message board that guthrie frequents, kirk knows what im talking about
there are some links under the guthrie govan music thread for those who are new to guthrie, check out the video clips from the clinic he just did....he will blow your mind |

if you are looking for teachers check out don mock or wayne krantz. these guys know so much its unreal. i do think jimmy herring is the most expressive player out there. lots of emotion and energy. he has the tone and knowledge of his instument to play whats needed for the song he is working on. that is what its all about. playing,, what the music call for. its all about having fun and just going for it. take care gill |

I think no matter how smart we are, there is always something else to learn.

gill youre right in some aspects such as sweeping arpeggios, but guthrie is an incredibly well rounded player. classical, straight jazz, fusion, bluegrass...he can play all flawlessly....im not attacking jimmy chops at all, i just feel as though guthrie is a more well rounded player.
As for guitar lessons.....is this true that wayne is giving lessons outside his website? i saw him at the 55 in NYC numerous times. he never ceases to amaze me. Second greatest melodic player in my eyes |

i have gutrie govan's dvd of that show. yes he is fast and has lots of chops. does alot of styles but when i think of someone covering alot of styles steve morse or shawn lane come to mind. i have followed morse since 1975 and he cover alot of styles as well as any one... remember its the music that counts not all these licks....... you don't hum to yourself a penatonic lick or a diminshed while you are playing music or working out in the yard.....its the melodies and composistion. check out world waiting by scott henderson on the reality check cd best song and guitar solo around.... has it all...... speed ,melody ,phrasing the whole package. night meets light the dregs its all there take care gill |

i dont think i ever mentioned guthrie's speed once....i was talking about his virtuosity...speed, alone, doesnt make a virtuoso, but if you heard him playing straight jazz....you would hear melodic and original music |

Jay, Larry is a bluegrass buddy of mine. I've seen him play with John Molo's MoDereko a few times. Those were very interesting. I really dig when Larry plays spacegrass, you know that Miles and Django sittin' around with a jar of corn squeezins sound. Loads of LKE photos at my website. _________________ --After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music. (Aldous Huxley) |
