Cool OK, so who all on this BBS is signed up for the August 28 clinic?

It will be fun to meet in person. Can't decide, though: Should I wear a red carnation in my lapel, or, as the clinic goes on, just let you identify me as "the man with no chops"?

For those of you who are on the fence about doing one of these clinics, from my own experience (this will be my second one) there are no attendees who are "overqualified" or "underqualified." While my first clinic left my beginner's head spinning, it was definitely in a good way. The day went by all too quickly. On the other end of the spectrum, I recomended to my own guitar teacher (a working pro who studied with Frank Gambale) that he give one of the clinics a try. His reaction afterward: "Wow!"

In other words, when the clinic is advertised as for all levels of skill and interest, Robben and Anne aren't kidding. I can't imagine anyone who wouldn't get not just something, but a whole lot, out of one of Robben's clinics.

As a bonus: The local area makes for a great visit. If you're coming from some distance, surround your clinic experience with a couple of days on each side. If anyone has specific interests, or just wants some general ideas about what to do around Ojai and Ventura County, let me know. Local weather for the November clinic will be perfect. I guarantee it.

Hey BlueRunner, I'll be going to the Aug. clinic, and I'm psyched already. I'm waiting to hear from America West if I can be assured of carrying-on my Baker, otherwise, I won't dare bring it.

My plane is scheduled to land in LA on Fri at 11:52am. I'll be staying at the Oakridge Inn in Ojai. Someone recommended that on my way to Ojai, I swing west and check out Santa Barbara. Unfortunately, I couldn't stay longer than the weekend, so I'll be headed back to LA on Sunday morning.

I'm open to suggestions on what to do during the short time I'm visiting, including restaurants, bars, and sights to see.

Not sure yet of my attire, but if I do bring my Baker, it has a Koa top with a palm tree cutout, and an orange case...

Cool For those of you coming in from out of town (way out of town, in some cases), and looking for something to do in the Ojai area the night of August 28: Appearing at SOhO in Santa Barbara (a 45-minute drive from Ojai, and a venue where Robben Ford has played) is a band called Soul City Survivors. Looks like lots of fun. For info, go to www.sohosb.com , or check out the band's web site at www.soulcitysurvivors.com .

I'll second the suggestion. They sound like one hoppin' band. If nothing better comes along, I'll probably be heading over there...

I will be at the August 28th clinic. I am coming in from Detroit on mid day Friday. I'm going to swing by and see some of my old GIT buddies Friday afternoon and buzz out to Ojai Friday evening. So far, I think I'm open Saturday night.

Cool Let me know if any of you who are coming to the clinic have specific interests about things to see and do. In the meantime:

In addition to the Soul City Surviors appearing at SOhO in Santa Barbara, a Santa Barbara-based duo, Antara & Delilah, will be at Zoey's Cafe in Ventura. Info and music samples (sort of Indigo Girls-ish) available at www.antdeli.com Info about Zoey's at www.zoeyscafe.com Reservations recomended if you want to do dinner and the show. Also, on Sunday night the 29th at Zoeys, jazz from the Greg Hillman group, including local jazz and rock guitarist Bruce Kimmell, who just happens to be working very hard trying to teach me how to play.

A full listing of music in the Ojai area won't really be available until Thursday the 26th, when our local free weekly entertainment rag comes out. I'll post what I can, realizing that some of you may be traveling.

If you're staying down in L.A., check out www.cozysblues.com A great club in the San Fernando Valley. Friday night the 27th it's Zac Harmon & the Mid South Review, a great band that won a nationwide competition in Memphis last year. Saturday night the 28th it's Guitar Shorty. The venerable Blue Cafe in Long Beach is under new ownership. Shane Dwight is booked for the 28th. www.shanedwight.com

For general info, check out www.visitojai.com Among the restaurants listed, Suzanne's and The Ranch House are great (great, that is, if you're traveling with a spouse or friend; if you go alone, you'll end up regretting that you don't have a spouse or friend with whom to share the experience). By the way, Robben and Anne will pass out map of local restaurants at the clinic, for lunch. Missing from the list, however, will be one of my favorites, Ruben's Burritos, a hole-in-the-wall on Signal Street that serves up gigantic burritos. Perhaps Robben is afraid that any clinic participate who actually eats one of these 10-pount monsters will have trouble staying awake during the afternoon!

For info about down the road in Ventura, try www.ventura-usa.com You can link on info about an outdoor concert the night of the 28th at the historic Olivas Adobe, featuring African percussionist Dodo Munoko.

Down the "other road," Santa Paula is fairly sleepy. It does have, however, the California Oil Museum, currently with a show featuring vintage British racing cars and motorcycles. www.oilmuseum.net

Believe it or not, none of the above is a paid announcement. I just don't want to feel guilty after my 20-minute drive back home, wondering if you're stuck in a motel room watching Jessica Simpson on TV with no idea about what to do around here.

By the way. Just who IS Jessica Simpson? (My wife tried to explain to me the other night, but it simply didn't compute. She's apparently a nice-looking young lady who's married to some guy who I saw briefly on a TV show about the two of them. They were sitting on a sofa in a living room, doing nothing, and talking even less. I figured it was one of those 1980's-type "art" projects where the viewer is forced to watch a two-hour film of someone sleeping.)

Writing this is absolutely killing me. I signed up for this (Aug) clinic at the end of April, and have been eagerly counting down the months, weeks, and now just the days. And, now, I have a personal family matter that most probably will prevent me from going... Crying or Very sad

I sent Anne an email asking if anyone inquired about being on a waiting list, but there is no one. So, if anyone reading this decides they may be interested, you can take my spot. I don't even care about the fee- I'd rather see someone benefit than an empty seat wasted...

Crying or Very sad JohnnyZ: Really sorry to learn that you won't be able to make it. Hope we get another chance to meet some time in the future. Also, hope that the personal matter isn't of a serious or sad nature, or if it is, that it gets resolved OK for everyone involved. We'll miss you.

It's now definite that I won't be going to the clinic next week.

Anyone who wants my spot, please let me know. I'm also going to be informing Anne Ford in case anyone contacts her for an opening.

BlueRunner, thanks for the note. I'm sure I'll get to a future clinic. I'm even considering the Nov. one...

It's less than 48 hours til the clinic... Any last-minute takers for my vacant spot?

As disappointed as I am at not being able to go, I truly hope that it's a wonderful & memorable event for all of you going. I take consolation in knowing that I will go at another time, and I hope I can still meet up with some of you characters then...

I'm sure there'll be reviews- I can't wait!

Enjoy,
~JohnnyZ~

Go here http://www.robbenford.com/clinic.htm, fill out the registration form, mail it to the address shown with a $150 check, and you're in. All the info you'll need to know is either there, or in this message board.
